Society becomes silent when reminded that many generations ago, African Americans were barred from buying private homes and private property, even when they had enough saved up. You can’t force a people into poverty and then make fun of and blame them for being In those predicaments.

#Every28Hours (2/23/15): Meet Janisha. Janisha was involved in a domestic dispute with her girlfriend, which resulted in her girlfriend calling the police to take her in for a mental health evaluation. Janisha’s girlfriend warned the officer’s upon entry into their apartment that she had a knife, but the she didn’t believe that she would hurt them, stressing again that Janisha was unstable and needed evaluation. When Janisha did not drop the knife, an officer proceeded to shoot her twice. According to Janisha’s neighbors she was a quiet and small young woman, barely standing above five feet. According to her girlfriend, Janisha was more than 6 feet away from the cops who shot her. Janisha’s story is not an easy one, but she deserved a chance at life, not a bullet when she needed help. Uplift her name. Janisha Fonville, we fight for you now too. #staywoke #farfromover
Teen scientist harnesses sun power to help Navajo community
New Mexico teen Raquel Redshirt uses everyday materials and the sun to build solar ovens, fulfilling a Navajo community need and winning an award at the Intel ISEF competition.
Growing up on New Mexico’s Navajo Nation, Raquel Redshirt was well aware of the needs of her community. Many of her impoverished neighbors lacked basics such as electricity, as well as stoves and ovens to cook food.
Though resources in the high desert are limited, Raquel realized one was inexhaustible: the sun. “That’s where I got the idea of building a solar oven,” the teen says.
She researched solar ovens and found that most incorporate mirrors or other expensive materials. Raquel wanted to create a design that anyone could easily afford and replicate, using readily available materials.

ACLU Sues To End Almost Total White Control Over Ferguson’s Majority Black School System
A lawsuit filed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union paints a grim picture of a school district whose leadership bears little resemblance to its student body. Although “African-American students accounted for 77.1% of total enrollment in the Ferguson-Florissant School District in the 2011-2012 school year,” only one of the district’s seven school board members are black. This is the district that includes Ferguson, Missouri, where the police shooting of African American teenager Michael Brown triggered widespread protests.
Under white-elected leadership, according to the ACLU’s complaint, “[t]he District experiences significant racial disparities in terms of enrollment in gifted programs, access to advanced classes, assignment to special education programs, and school discipline.”
The complaint describes a pattern that is common in many school districts that were once segregated by law. White residents dominate a local school board, even as the overwhelming majority of students are black and most white families send their children to private schools. The complaint alleges that “only 13% of the district’s student body is white” and “approximately 68% of white school-age children who live in Ferguson or Florissant do not attend public schools in the District.”
